Sailing Day

    this comment is actually for your essay "On Incompetence", and the first thing I have to say, and it's oh so incredibly important (if I do say so myself), is "IT has nothing to do with competence or intelligence!"

    Learning Disabilities as a field of neurological or developmental psychological study pretty much has NO EXPLANATION WHATSOEVER as to WHAT causes these kinds of developments, or WHY they happen in kids who live entirely safe and healthy lives.

    The only definitive thing about LD's is that they exist. It has little to do with effort, capacity for learning, intelligence, or insight. children with Learning Disabilities are not lazy or stupid. In fact when first challenged kids of any sort tend to try harder, but trying to push a square peg into a round hole will only end up breaking something.

    Another tragic fact about Learning Disabilities is if you have one, there is likely something else different about the way your brain works, (aka, the more "brain problems" you have, the more likely you are to have more "brain problems").

    It is very important to realize that as a child, who is still trying to figure out how shit works in general, let alone the HUMAN BRAIN in specific, there is practically nothing you can do on your own to mitigate the damage. And Public education is just not working anymore. It's car sales, get the kid sold on to the next person, someone else will eventually give a shit, pick up your commission and forget about the poor bastard you heartily screwed.

    Of recent, groups of dedicated teachers have begun to pool their experiences and develop ways of teaching kids so they actually understand what their brain will not absorb conventionally! And it has nothing to do with making the kids try harder or care more! It's actually about the teachers caring or working harder!

    I don't want to say much more, because I don't want to misprepresent anything in my fervor.
