Open mouth, insert foot.

Despite its reputation for leading the world down a hedonistic path, "Hollywood is one of the most homophobic places on the planet," de Shields says.

I can't compose a sentence that will accurately communicate the "wuh?" feeling I experienced upon reading this quote. So, I will instead allow my jaw to hang slightly open in mild disbelief, and let the reader intuit the rest.

Quoted from here.

EDIT: I think the subtlety may have flown over a few heads. I'll clarify: this poorly-worded quote directly implies that homosexuality is synonymous with hedonism. And that's kind of fucked up.

  1. Yeah, that was a really crazy article. I'd always thought that "acting" meant you played a different person entirely, but apparently, if you're gay, you can't play straight people. But I guess straight people can play gay people? Well, except for the worry of getting typecast as "teh ghey" or whatever...

  2. brigid did you even read the article? D: The entire FIRST HALF of it is devoted to a fag playing a straight.

I am with luka - what the fuck does homosexuality have to do with hedonism? Isn't the author here sort of slipping in his own bias against the entire supposed point of the article? WHAT A FAGGOT. XD

ALSO LUKA QUIT READING CNN FOR FUCK'S SAKE. If they keep getting hits, they keep putting this shit up!!

  3. Yes, I did read the article, and was commenting on the following:

"I have friends in the industry -- casting directors, for an example -- who are gay, who will not cast another person and the reason given is, 'Oh, he's too gay,' " says veteran performer Andre de Shields, an openly gay actor who's earned two Tony award nominations. "A lot of this has to do with self-loathing."

  4. You know... I lived in Hollywood... and it was by far, the most gay approving city I've ever lived in. >.> Then again, I didn't work in the movie industry... but really, yeah... somehow, I just don't believe half of that article. Most of my gay friends who DO work the industry never complained of not getting parts because of their homosexuality... and if they did, it was because they were looking for an excuse when really it was because they suck as actors. xD

  5. Brigid, Teh Pang, you're going off topic. The topic involves this reporter's casual equation of homosexuality with hedonism.

For future reference, when commenting on an article, I do tend to quote the relevant part. That's why this entry's title is "Open Mouth, Insert Foot" and not "Hollywood SUCKS."

And Anon: You're right, I'm only encouraging them. It's like an automobile crash, where you can't look away...

  6. Okay, two things before the article:
Blogger comments interface sucks and must die a horrible horrible death (bloody thing doing some silly endless reload thing)
    Also, what about Astronaut Cowboys?

Of course homosexuality equals hedonism! Those gays are all about teh secks! Everyone knows if you're a fag you'll sleep with any guy who looks at you crosseyed! It's a Proven Fact.

    CNN must die now kthx.
