  1. So, completely unrelated to ANYTHING, I just realized that you all live in northfield, and I'm applying to Carleton college there. is it (northfield) pretty? are there nice walking areas? any angry neighbor-people? tips on how to survive the winters?

    and DELIGHTFUL update. thank you!

  2. Northfield is lovely! We've got a lot of scenery. You can get in your car and just drive around the countryside admiring the hills and woods, or go kayaking on the Cannon river, or hiking at the Carleton Arb... lots of stuff.

The people are mellow here and generally seem nice.

Survive the winters by getting lots of gear and going for walks in it. You'll be used to the cold weather in no time :) It's the summers that get me.

  3. thank you! I might end up visiting, so I shall see for myself. DC summers get relativly cold, but in never snows much in the city, so I'll have to see how that works out.

  4. Expect anywhere from 30 degrees f to -35 with wind chill for a regular Minnesota winter. On the plus side: this town looks like a freakin' postcard throughout the Christmas season. Seriously, the entire downtown becomes a winter wonderland.

Oh, and there's a Malt-o-Meal plant here, so the entire town usually smells like baking muffins. After a while you learn to tell what flavor cereal they're making on any given day.

    SO YUMMY :)

  5. DC winters have got nothing on Minnesota. (I grew up in DC, then moved to Montreal for my undergrad)
    Be ready for a shock!

But, on the plus side, you do get to gloat about having survived a REAL winter. And you do learn to love the sensation of your eyes freezing shut.
